Fintech giant Stripe has announced it will reintroduce a cryptocurrency payment service later this year, starting with support for Circle's USDC stablecoin, which can be traded on the Solana, Ethereum and Polygon blockchains. The decision marks Stripe's first return to the cryptocurrency market since it stopped supporting bitcoin in 2018. "Cryptocurrencies are finding real uses," said John Collison, the company's co-founder and president, during Thursday's keynote. He noted that as transaction speeds increase and costs decrease, cryptocurrencies are finally starting to make sense as a medium of exchange.

Stripe first ventured into the Bitcoin ecosystem in 2014 and discontinued those services four years later due to the high volatility of bitcoin. However, the "crypto winter" of 2018 has not deterred Stripe's interest in cryptocurrencies. The company then became one of the co-founders of Facebook's Libra project, attempting to return to the market, but later withdrew from the project. In 2022, Stripe launched a project aimed at facilitating fiat and cryptocurrency payments, demonstrating its continued interest in cryptocurrencies. Currently valued at $65 billion, Stripe is one of the largest payment service providers in the world, with more than $1 trillion in transactions in 2023. This move will provide Stripe's customers with more payment options and will hopefully bring more recognition and adoption to the cryptocurrency market.
